Think Blue, Think Green

Marine Spark X sheds light on the critical ecological crisis regarding loss of kelp forests along the Norwegian coast. By showcasing the issue and raising awareness, we help drive attention, dialogue, and action.

The story of the kelp forest

Along the Norwegian coastline there are over 80 billion sea urchins. Around 5,000 km² of kelp forest have been lost, grazed down by sea urchins. What remains are barren marine deserts where vibrant ecosystems once thrived.

The kelp forests is one of the world's largest and most important carbon sinks on earth. As well as it serve as a marine habitat for organisms and life on the seafloor along the coast. This is a major ecological problem. However, where there are problems solutions can often be found. Marine Spark X aims to be part of the solution!

Background

In the 1960s and 70s, overfishing of key species such as cod and wolffish — natural predators of sea urchins — severely disrupted marine ecosystems. As these predators largely disappeared, the natural controls keeping sea urchin populations in check were lost.

Marine Spark X is dedicated to preventing the destruction caused by sea urchins along the Norwegian coast and take part in restoring the vital kelp forests that have been lost.
Our mission is to develop a sustainable, long-term solution that not only protects marine ecosystems, but also supports a circular economy — creating positive value for the aquaculture industry, local communities, and the environment.
